As the atomic number increases in Group 2 from Be to Ba, the first ionization energy

NY Regents Chemistry Exam August 2023 Question 35

35  As the atomic number increases in Group 2 from Be to Ba, the first ionization energy

(1) decreases, and the atomic radius decreases

(2) decreases, and the atomic radius increases

(3) increases, and the atomic radius decreases

(4) increases, and the atomic radius increases

Solution: We either memorize the trend in ionization energy or check Table S on the Reference Table. Table S lists all the elements with their ionization energies and atomic radii. You can find Be and Ba and see the trend. Alternatively, you can memorize that first ionization energy increases up and to the right on the Periodic Table while atomic radius has the opposite trend. Choice 2
