NY Regents Chemistry Exam August 2023 Question 7

7 As the elements with atomic numbers 11 through 17 are considered in order of increasing atomic number, the classification of the elements changes from

(1) metal to metalloid to nonmetal

(2) metal to nonmetal to metalloid

(3) nonmetal to metalloid to metal

(4) nonmetal to metal to metalloid

Solution: Metals are located to the left of the staircase on the Periodic Table. Metalloids are located on the staircase. Nonmetals are located to the right of the staircase. As the elements are listed from atomic number 11 (Na) to 17(Cl), they go from metal to metalloid to nonmetal (1).
