June 2023 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

9 At STP, which property can be used to differentiate a 10.-gram sample of NaCl(s) from a 10.-gram sample of NaNO3(s)? (1) mass of the sample (2) temperature of the sample

(3) solubility in water (4) phase at STP

Solution: Note that both samples have the same mass and are both solid (s). Also, STP stands for standard temperature, which means they have the same temperature as well. Solubility in water, however, can differentiate one substance from another.

Answer: 3
