Given the equation representing a reaction:Cl2(g) + 2I2(aq) → 2Cl2(aq) + I2(s)What is the number of moles of electrons gained by Cl2(g) when 2.0 moles of electrons are lost by I2(aq)?

Regents Chemistry Exam August 2024 Question 45

45 Given the equation representing a reaction:

Cl2(g) + 2I2(aq) → 2Cl2(aq) + I2(s)

What is the number of moles of electrons gained by Cl2(g) when 2.0 moles of electrons are lost by I2(aq)?

(1) 1.0 mol (3) 3.0 mol

(2) 2.0 mol (4) 4.0 mol

Solution:

In a balanced equation, the number of electrons gained is equal to the number of electrons lost. 2 moles of electrons were gained, which means 2 moles of electrons will be lost. Choice 2 is the correct answer.
