Given the incomplete equation representing a neutralization reaction:

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 47

47 Given the incomplete equation representing a neutralization reaction:

Sr(OH)2 + 2HNO3 → X + 2H2O

What is the formula of the missing product X?

(1) SrO (3) Sr(NO2)2

(2) SrO2 (4) Sr(NO3)2

Solution:

This is a double displacement reaction : AB+CD --> AD+CB. To predict the products, we need to switch partners. H goes with OH to form water and Sr will go with NO3. The oxidation number for Sr is +2 (found in the Periodic Table) and the oxidation number of NO3 is -1 found on the Reference Table. We cross multiply the numbers to arrive at the correct formula. We get Sr(NO3)2. Choice 4 is correct.
