June 2023 Regents Chemistry Exam Questions 51-52
The element technetium, Tc, has several isotopes. The bright-line spectrum of technetium has been observed in the spectra of some stars.
51 Compare the energy of an electron in the first shell of a technetium atom to the energy of an electron in the third shell of the same atom.
Solution: The further away electron is from the nucleus, the higher energy it has. An electron in the first shell will have less energy than an electron in the third shell of the same atom.
52 State, in terms of protons and neutrons, why the various nuclides of technetium are isotopes of each other.
Solution: Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
