NY Regents Chemistry Exam August 2023 Questions 53-55

The Group 1 elements below hydrogen are called alkali metals, and the first five Group 17 elements are called halogens.

53 Compare the electrical conductivity of an alkali metal at STP with the electrical conductivity of a halogen at STP.

Solution: Metals are good conductors of electricity while haloges are not.

54 State the type of chemical bonds formed when an alkali metal and a halogen react to form a compound.

Solution: Ionic bond is a bond that is formed between a metal and a nonmetal.

55 Explain, in terms of electrons, why the halogens are all placed in the same group on the Periodic Table.

Solution: Elements that are in the same group on the Periodic Table have the same number of valence electrons.

Halogens are all in the same group because they all have seven valence electrons.
