What is the amount of heat energy absorbed when 40.0 grams of water is heated from 10.0°C to 30.0°C?

NY Regents Chemistry Exam August 2023 Question 41

41 What is the amount of heat energy absorbed when 40.0 grams of water is heated from 10.0°C to 30.0°C?

(1) 1.67×10^3 J

(2) 3.34×10^3 J

(3) 5.02×10^3 J

(4) 2.67×10^5 J

Solution: All of the heat equations can be found in Table T on the Reference Table. An equation that involves change in temperature is q=mCΔT where q=heat m = mass and C = specific heat capacity.

m=40 g from the question

ΔT = Tfinal - Tinitial = 30°C-10°C= 20°C

C of water = 4.18 J/g•K (can be found in Table B on the Reference Table)

Now, we can plug everything into the equation.

q= 40g 4.18 J/g•K 20°C = 3.34 *10^3 J, Choice 2
