June 2017 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

44 Which compound is classified as an ether? (1) CH3CHO

(2) CH3OCH3 (3) CH3COCH3

(4) CH3COOCH3

Solution: We can look at Table R on the Reference Table which shows functional groups. An ether is has a functional group of an oxygen in between two carbons, -O-. This is choice 2. Choice 1 is an aldehyde (CHO). Choice 4 is an ester (COOC). Choice 3 is a ketone ( COC). This one is tricky but it is helpful to draw it out, keeping in mind that every carbon wants 4 bonds.

Answer: 2
