Which particle model diagram represents asample of neon at 35 K and 1.0 atmosphere?

Regents Chemistry Exam August 2024 Question 35

35 Which particle model diagram represents a sample of neon at 35 K and 1.0 atmosphere?

Solution:

Neon is a noble gas ( Group 18 on the Periodic Table). Gas particles have a lot of space in between them. Therefore, we can eliminate choices 2 (solid) and 4(liquid). Choice 3 represents a diatomic element (two atoms bonded together). Neon is not a diatomic element. Choice 1 is the correct answer.

To memorize diatomic elements, you can use the following mnemonic: BrINCl HOF = elements that are diatomic.

Br2I2N2Cl2 H2O2F2
