Regents Chemistry Exam August 2024 Question 41

41 Which phase change results in an increase in disorder?

(1) I2(g) → I2(s)

(2) Cl2(l ) → Cl2(g)

(3) N2O4(g) → N2O4( l)

(4) H2O(l) → H2O(s)

Solution:

Solid phase is least disordered, followed by liquids, and gases are most disordered. Going from solid to liquid to gas results in an increase in disorder. Choice 2 is the correct answer.
