June 2023 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

25 Which substance is an Arrhenius base? (1) HNO3

(2) KNO3

(3) LiOH

(4) CH3COOH

Solution: An Arrhenius base produces OH- ions when dissolved in water. We can eliminate choices 1 and 2. A metal with an OH is a base as can be seen in Table L on the Reference Table where examples of bases are NaOH and KOH. Similarly, LiOH is an Arrhenius base.

Answer: 3
