45  Which type of organic reaction produces carbon dioxide and water?

(1) combustion

(2) esterification

(3) fermentation

(4) saponification



Solution: Combustion is a reaction between hydrocarbon and oxygen that produces carbon dioxide and water. Choice 1 is correct. Esterification produces an ester. Fermentation is a reaction where glucose produces ethanol and carbon dioxide. An enzyme such as zymase is used to speed up the reaction. Saponification produces soap.
